My name is Alyssa, and I love to sew! I have been sewing since the 12th grade, when I was required to take a Home Economics class. Who knew I would like it? My mom, who had been encouraging me to try sewing, but I thought that it was too uncool. My first makes were pretty Becky home-ec-ky but I got really hooked (and improved a lot) after studying Costume Design in college.
Fourteen years later, and I’ve had a career as a costume designer/technician for theatre, as well as teaching sewing. I’m now onto my second career path, studying dress history, textile conservation, and textile science for my master’s degree.
While I make historic costumes for both fun and for research purposes over on my other blog, The Sartorial Sleuth, my main focus here on WWNDW? is vintage and modern sewing for myself, particularly styles from the 1940s-1970s. Outside of sewing, I like to knit, read old mystery novels, and to spend time outdoors (especially the beach and the woods). Over the last five or so years I’ve been working slowly and steadily to improve the sustainability of my personal life and sewing habits.
